Prized Carlton recruit Mitchell McGovern has stunned the AFL world after revealing that he has a spine by breaking his back.
McGovern was widely considered to be spineless after a small dispute with Adelaide Crows coach Don Pyke led to him walking out on the club to join Carlton, a team where there is rarely any pressure to succeed.
Despite reports that McGovern sustained his injury in a training incident, the Journal can reveal that the break was the result of having to shoulder the weight of playing as a number one target, whilst also being accountable for a defender.
The development comes as a blow for the struggling club, with both their first and second round draft picks (nominally pick 1 and pick 19) having being traded to the Crows for a packet of chips.
